Mike's
Ad Blocking Hosts file
A hosts
file
(current example)
tells your computer what numerical address (209.61.186.253) is
associated with what URL (www.everythingisnt.com.) .
This
file
is a very simple hack which takes ad server URLs and redirects them to
non-existant numerical addresses.
In other words we're fooling the
internet. Its
pretty
simple and it works. Tens of thousands of people use it
everyday
with no problems.

Installation Instructions:
I recommend using the installer for
Windows
95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP This automatically installs the hosts file
for
you. No fuss, no muss.
Note: The installer does not back up your old hosts file. Remember to
delete
your browser's cache (Tools>Internet Options>Delete
Files) to get
rid of the ads you've already downloaded.
Special thanks to Allen Jackson for writing the installer.
Manual
Instructions:
Windows NT/2000/XP
XP users just right click here
and "save as" to your c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
directory
overwriting your old hosts file. You may want to backup your old hosts
file. 2000 users will have to use this path: c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc Win
95/98 users should use this path: c:\windows
Linux/Unix/Mac OSX
Remove the extension and save this to
your /etc
directory.
Considering unix is a server-based OS with a complex permission
structure you'll probably want to just
append your hosts file instead of overwriting it.
OSX can use the hosts file, but copying
it to /etc isn't enough.
When finished please empty out your cache and restart your browser or
reboot your computer.
