12/06/2005 Entry: "Smoking ban coming to Chicago tomorrow?"

Smoking ban coming to Chicago tomorrow? After countless nights of coming home smelling like the Marlboro man, I can't wait.

"It's Chicago politics at its finest," said Dan Rosenthal, owner of Trattoria No. 10 and spokesman for Chefs and Owners United for Good Health--a group of 120 restaurants that support a comprehensive smoking ban. "It's clout over caring. Personal benefit over personal health. It's absolute insanity. Every major city in the country should be laughing at the process we're going through."

The smoking ban debate "makes me want to puke," Rosenthal said.

I don't understand how banning smoking would hurt business - if someone wants to go out, they are going to go out whether or not they can smoke. Lucky for me California banned smoking awhile back and I don't have to pine for the basn in Chicago anymore. I hope they make the right decision - bastards.

Yay!
The ban came down today, but they have 2.5 years to come into compliance. So it's probably going to be exactly that long until the places I like to go cut smoking....

Smoking bans don't hurt business.
Smokers go outside to smoke...seems reasonable.

If it had been an organic change resulting from a communal realisation of the fact that smoking smells and is not healthy, I'd be behind it.

Really, though, it's a politically imposed value.
It really is a scheme to cut insurance company payouts by promoting "healthy" lifestyles.
There is no whiff of altruism behind it.

Be honest, people drinking in bars and bowling alleys aren't all that concerned about health.
They just don't want to have to pay for dry cleaning after one night out. Smoking is YUCKY.

That's the agenda.
