Ebert gets politically correct. Again. Roger, its a friggin comedy. I remember when he couldn't recommend Ben Stiller's Zoolander because it involved a plot to kill a prime minister. After seeing him recommend Blade and its sequels, well, perhaps its time for the sun-times to find a replacement. Perhaps the man has simply grown humorless.

Happy Times is a great movie that I'd recommend to anyone.
What Ebert doesn't mention is that the young girl is horribly abused at home, and feels utterly helpless to improve her situation. She is unloved and treated as a useless parasite.
The men who help her are hope to improve themselves with their "Happy Times" hotel, which is cobbled together from salvage and located on a vacant lot that they don't own. The idea is making something from nothing -- and they have a whole lot of nothing.
They don't have the means to help Ying with material things, but they have good intentions -- and the good that comes of it is that she comes to understand that does have worth. Her ersatz job serves as training wheels that enable her to get a real job.
It's a beautiful and touching movie -- by turns comic and tragic, just like real life.
Sheesh.
