12/18/2004 Entry: "New version of trillian out."

New version of Trillian out. And its very nice. It finally looks likes like a windows application instead of an art school drop-out's attempt at a "fancy" skin. I'm glad the age of "fancy" skins is pretty much over. I haven't installed anything with a wacky layout in a long time. MS is finally out of the wacky skin game with its last couple version of media player. The app that came bundled with my 2001-2002 era sound driver was this giant spider thing. I never understood the allure of a big ugly graphic with ambigious buttons. I like to re-skin apps sometimes, like Orbit for Mozilla, but only because they not only look good but also have a good user interface. Previously, I used Dark Bevel for Trillian.

Trillian also supports encrypted sessions between Trillian users, which is a godsend of sorts, especially when sourceforge hosts an app designed to sniff IM traffic on LANs. Any idiot can install a sniffer. Shame, there's no standard for IM encryption. I know yahoo has its own system now and there's SSL-gaim too.

If you like Trillian that much, you ought to check out the wonderful open source product called Gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net). I used to be a Trillian junky... the second I found Gaim that all changed, and I haven't looked back.
