06/10/2004 Entry: "Nontoxic fugu is boring"
"Nontoxic fugu is boring," he declared. "Fugu is exciting because it's toxic." My understanding is that people order the fugu because its prepared in such a way that there are trace elements of the toxin, thus giving the couple a nice buzz, like drinking too much saki. I guess its like a very expensive aphrodisiac with the slight chance of being poisoned and an even slighter chance of being poisoned to death.

That's funny. Just last night I watched the "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish" episode of "The Simpsons," where Homer eats fugu prepared by an inexperienced chef and is given 24 hours to live. "Come on, pal. Fugu me!"

Slight tingling on the tongue at best--definitely not any real intoxication. If you push the limits (e.g. eating liver and ovaries), you're much more likely to feel the effects... one of which is death. I got much more of a zing from the sake (with a dried fugu fin floating in it).
