Ah, the old "give em hell/truth" Hitchens is back after a long pro-war break, but he makes sure to take a few digs at "intellectuals" and Democrats as well. Seems a bit odd as Hitchens has always painted himself as a "rough and tumble" intellectual himself and is/was pretty liberal, but he's a contrarian first it seems. I think the best thing that can be said about this piece is that its at slate.com so that means lots of eyeballs. Probably the first real criticism of Reagan anywhere near the mainstream. Its regretable Hitchens plays the "Democrats equal pussies" card. Its no secret Bush 41 gave Saddam the green-light to rough up Kuwait a little over the oil border dispute. When the Saudis freaked out is when we decided to go to war. I doubt Dukakis or Mondale would have let Saddam loose on the Kuwaitis. Have we forgotten this already: "We have no opinion on your Arab-Arab conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait. Secretary (of State James) Baker has directed me to emphasize the instruction."A month later Saddam had troops on the border ready for the invasion. Nice transcript here.
